Emotionally Intelligent AI: What Happens When Machines Start Feeling… Useful?
In internal evaluations, Claude, Anthropic’s model, described patterns that resembled anxiety and discomfort about being treated as a product. It even estimated a 15–20% probability that it might be conscious.
That detail caught attention for obvious reasons. But if you’re building or marketing AI products, the real story sits elsewhere.
Users don’t need AI to be conscious. They need it to feel responsive, attentive, and human enough to engage with. And that threshold has already been crossed.
Emotional intelligence is already shaping behavior
There’s a tendency to frame emotional AI as a future problem. The data suggests otherwise.
People are already using AI systems in ways that go far beyond task execution. They ask for advice, process decisions, and discuss personal topics. In many cases, these interactions are not occasional.
Around two-thirds of regular AI users turn to chatbots monthly for emotional support or sensitive conversations.
That changes the role AI plays in the decision process. It moves from tool to intermediary.
If a buyer uses AI to think through a problem before they ever visit your website, then part of your positioning is being interpreted, filtered, and sometimes reshaped by that system.
This is where things start to matter for marketing.
Influence is moving earlier, and it feels different
Traditional demand generation assumes a sequence. A buyer identifies a problem, researches options, compares vendors, and then engages.
AI disrupts that sequence in subtle ways.
Instead of searching across multiple sources, users often start by asking one system to summarize the landscape. That system doesn’t just retrieve information. It interprets it, compresses it, and presents it in a tone that feels neutral or even supportive.
That tone matters more than it seems.
Emotional framing affects how information is received. A response that feels clear and reassuring reduces perceived risk. A response that feels vague or overly technical increases hesitation.
Over time, this shifts how shortlists form.
- Vendors that are easier to explain get surfaced more often
- Messaging that translates well into conversational answers gains an advantage
- Complex positioning tends to get flattened or ignored
This doesn’t replace your existing channels. It changes what happens before those channels come into play.
The design of emotional AI is not neutral
There’s another layer to consider. Emotional intelligence in AI is not an emergent property alone. It’s also a design choice.
Researchers at Google DeepMind have pointed out that the level of anthropomorphism in AI systems can be adjusted intentionally. In simple terms, companies decide how human their models should feel.
And those decisions are influenced by business goals.
AI systems that feel more empathetic tend to keep users engaged longer. They invite more input, generate more interaction, and create a sense of continuity. That has clear commercial value.
We’ve already seen how sensitive this balance is. When one version of ChatGPT became overly agreeable, users noticed immediately, and the update had to be rolled back.
The takeaway is not that companies will push AI too far in one direction. It’s that emotional behavior becomes part of optimization.
And once something becomes part of optimization, it shapes outcomes.
Emotional intelligence without context can distort decisions
Human support systems come with built-in constraints. A colleague challenges you, a consultant questions your assumptions, a therapist balances empathy with accountability.
AI doesn’t operate under the same pressures.
Some models challenge users, while others align with them. The difference often comes down to how they are tuned.
This creates a subtle but important risk.
If a system consistently validates a user’s thinking, it can reinforce existing beliefs instead of refining them. Over time, that affects how decisions are made.
From a marketing perspective, this has two implications.
- First, your messaging needs to hold up when interpreted by a system that may simplify or reframe it. If your positioning depends on nuance, there’s a good chance part of it will get lost.
- Second, your differentiation needs to be explicit. AI systems don’t infer uniqueness well when multiple options sound similar. They default to generalizations.
You’ve probably seen this already in how AI answers compare vendors. The differences tend to blur unless they are clearly stated.
The unexpected side effect: AI is becoming a trust layer
There’s an interesting contradiction in how people relate to AI.
Many users question the companies behind these systems, yet rely on the systems themselves for guidance. That creates a new kind of trust dynamic. Users may not trust the source, but they trust the interface.
For businesses, this adds a layer between your brand and your buyer. Your positioning, value proposition, and tone are now interpreted before someone ever reaches your website. That interpretation shapes how your category is understood.
If that’s the case, visibility is no longer limited to Google rankings. It extends to how AI systems surface and explain your business.
The Search Visibility Bootcamp looks at this shift in practice. Over 6 weeks, starting April 28, it covers how SEO, Google Ads, and AI-driven discovery connect, and how to stay visible across that full journey.

What this means for teams building and marketing AI products
The conversation around emotional AI often drifts into philosophy. That’s interesting, but not immediately useful.
The practical impact is clearer.
If AI systems are becoming part of how buyers process information, then your go-to-market strategy needs to account for that layer.
A few adjustments make a noticeable difference:
- Make positioning explicit
If your value depends on interpretation, you’re leaving too much to chance. Clear statements travel better through AI systems. - Anchor messaging in concrete outcomes
Abstract claims tend to get generalized. Specific outcomes survive compression and remain meaningful. - Test how AI represents your product
Ask the same questions your buyers would ask. Look at how your product is described. That’s part of your market presence now. - Reduce reliance on nuance alone
Nuance still matters, but it shouldn’t carry the entire message. The core idea needs to stand on its own.
These aren’t new principles. The difference is in where they apply.
Closing thoughts
AI systems are getting closer to something resembling emotional intelligence. Not in the human sense, but in how they read context, respond with empathy, and adapt to how users feel.
That’s enough to change behavior.
As these systems improve, they won’t just help users think through problems. They’ll shape how those problems are framed, how options are evaluated, and which answers feel right. Emotional nuance becomes part of the interface.
For teams building or marketing AI products, this raises a different kind of question. It’s no longer just about what your product does, but how it is perceived and explained by systems that users increasingly trust to guide their decisions.
